Labor Day weekend is often filled with cookouts, beach days, and social gatherings – but for those in recovery, holidays can also bring added stress and temptation. At ACTS, we believe that you can celebrate without compromising your sobriety. In fact, a sober Labor Day can be one of the most meaningful ones yet.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you enjoy the long weekend while staying true to your recovery journey:
1. Know Your Triggers
If you’re attending an event where alcohol or substances will be present, prepare ahead of time. Bring a sober friend, have an exit plan, and remind yourself why your recovery matters. It’s okay to say no – and it’s okay to leave early.
2. Bring Your Own Drinks
Show up with your favorite non-alcoholic beverages so you’re never left empty-handed. Sparkling water, iced tea, mocktails, or flavored seltzers can keep you refreshed and in control.
3. Choose Sober-Friendly Activities
Plan your own gathering or join an event that doesn’t revolve around drinking. Think beach walks, nature hikes, games, volunteering, or a picnic with supportive friends and family.
4. Stay Connected to Your Support System
Don’t isolate. Reach out to your sponsor, peer support group, or someone you trust. A quick check-in call or text can make a big difference if you’re feeling overwhelmed or tempted.
5. Talk to Kids and Family About Sobriety
Labor Day weekend is also a great opportunity to have open conversations with children or loved ones about your recovery and the importance of making healthy choices. Your story can inspire and educate others.
6. Celebrate Your Progress
Whether you’re one day or ten years sober, your recovery is worth honoring. Take time this weekend to recognize how far you’ve come and how strong you are.
