Sober Super Bowl Tips: Enjoying the Big Game Without Alcohol

Feb 7, 2025

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events of the year, filled with food, fun, and football! For those in recovery or choosing to stay sober, it can also present challenges. But with a little planning, you can have an amazing time while staying alcohol-free. Here are some tips from ACTS to help you enjoy the game while prioritizing your well-being.

1. Host Your Own Sober Super Bowl Party

Take control of the environment by hosting your own alcohol-free event. Stock up on delicious snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and fun activities like football trivia or friendly betting on game scores (just for fun!).

2. Bring Your Own Drinks

If you’re heading to a gathering, bring your favorite non-alcoholic drinks so you always have something in hand. Whether it’s a sparkling water, a mocktail, or a soda, having an alternative helps you feel included without the pressure to drink.

3. Focus on the Game

Get into the excitement of the game itself! Make predictions, cheer for your favorite team, and enjoy the commercials and halftime show. Engaging fully in the game can help take the focus away from drinking.

4. Have an Exit Plan

If you’re in a setting where alcohol is present, make sure you have a way to leave if you start feeling uncomfortable. Drive yourself, have a rideshare app ready, or attend with a supportive friend who understands your commitment to sobriety.

5. Bring a Supportive Friend

Having a friend who also wants to stay sober can make things easier. You can hold each other accountable and enjoy the event together without any added pressure.

6. Plan a Fun Alternative

Not into the typical Super Bowl party scene? Plan something different, like a game night, a movie marathon, or a workout session themed around football. There’s no rule that says you have to celebrate the Super Bowl the traditional way!

7. Remind Yourself Why Sobriety Matters

If you ever feel tempted, take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come. Sobriety is a personal journey, and choosing to celebrate in a way that aligns with your values is a win in itself.

No matter how you celebrate, the most important thing is to enjoy the event in a way that supports your goals and well-being. Go team, and go YOU!
